This week at University Limerick arena things got very dramatic during a routine scuba training routine. Ciaran was taking our youngest trainee Richie through the paces of a ditch and recovery situation. Richie was tasked with figuring out how to solve a serious underwater problem. How to swim to the bottom of the pool, find his reg and mask, put on the mask, clear it, then don his full scuba gear, BCD and bottle. He was never coached, he wasn’t even helped by his buddy. He was simply given a problem and asked to solve it. I happened to be floating by with a camera and captured it all – here is the video, enjoy!

A motley crew assembled on Saturday morning at Fort Ross. Three hours later, we stepped into the water. Visibility was *excellent* – at least 15ft, and there was no surge to speak of, making things fun and mellow. Even the waves on short were ankle-biters. Divers were Tom and Kyle (who finished early and headed back at 29 minutes) and Andrew, Steve and Kenn (who stayed out another 19 minutes to drain tanks in preparation for viz/hydro work. The reef was lined with kelp and sprinkled with abalone, and the only impediment to viz were thousands of planktonic shrimp floating about.

Some 40 km out of the town of Narvik in Norway there is a lake which the Nazis used as a landing strip in the wintertime. One of their planes, a Junnkers Ju 52, now lies in the bottom of the lake. The most fun way to reach the wreck is by jumping into a crystal clear river leading to the lake, and drifting down.
