There is no real certification for Rock Climbing, there are courses to lecture you techniques and how to set up the ropes but its not like you get certified in it. SCUBA diving but is a certification and is excellent for life. You cant dive without the certification. In the end anyone can rock climb, probability are someone can easily do that for a project- scuba diving but takes usually about 2 classroom sessions and 4 dives to become certified (all included in the certification class).

Rock climbing classes can array from $80 for a couple hours to $300 or more for a weekend class. Scuba diving can array from $150-$300 depending on where you go and what companionship you get certified with. PADI is a world reknown certification and everyone will accept it.

As far as scuba, here in CA $300 is the average for the course. But you have to buy a mask, hood, fins, snorkel, and gloves so you’d be out around another $200. Then there are the open water dives — should be no cost for shore dives, but some places take you out on a boat and payment extra for that. It may well be worth it, but you should question these questions ahead of time so you don’t exceed your budget.

Irrevocably, once you are certified, you still need to either buy or rent gear to keep diving. Here in CA the rental fees are outrageous, about $50 for a full set of gear, per day. Makes for a pretty excellent incentive to buy your own stuff.
